Malware Solutions

As the lexicon of malicious computer viruses expands, so does the market for anti-virus software, spam guard, spam assassin and the like.  Malicious programs have evolved in the sense that viruses are now designed to be executed in such a stealth manner, that internet security technology must also shift to protect sensitive data.  Businesses cannot afford to operate without virus protection.  Neglecting to establish any malware solution or computer virus safeguard is a liability.

When it comes to the potential threat of compromised data, ignorance is NOT bliss.  Here are some definitions to help distinguish and break down the forms malware:

Computer Worm: Or, more commonly referred to as a worm, is a self-replicating malware program that uses a computer network to send copies of itself to other computers on that network. It's capable of doing this without any user intervention.  Lack of security puts the target computer "on the radar". Unlike a virus, a worm doesn't need to attach itself to an existing program. Worms cause harm to the network, primarily by consuming bandwidth - this differs from viruses as they usually corrupt files on the targeted computer.

Rootkit: This is a form of malware that is designed to gain administrative control of a computer.  Almost always, the intent is to perform an attack on a host computer system, but at a later date.  Once installed, the rootkit allows the attack to occur without being detected in order to gain root access to the computer, and sometimes, other machines.  It's is usually installed by a "cracker" on a computer after obtaining user access after having cracked the password.

Trojan Virus: This is also being referred to as "Trojan Horse" and is a virus worm.  It's classified as non-self-replicating.  This form of malware uses a guise of performing something favorable for the end-user, but essentially grants unauthorized access to the user's computer system.
